Snowy Owls on a Snowy Day in Boundary Bay

Once every few years when the lemming population runs low in Northern Canada, as a result Snowy Owls make the trip South to Boundary Bay BC. 2012 is one of these years; there are hundreds of these majestic birds calling this home as we speak! The birds hang out in the flats where they are able to hunt with ease. There are also numerous other birds of prey species in the area such as eagles and hawks. If you are looking to head out and see the owls for yourself this is where you need to go .

The video and photos were made using a Canon 7D, Canon 300mm f4l and Canon 2x extender II.

This film keeps on expiring – another go with the Canon AE1 Program

It seems that once every 6 months or so I pull out my old Canon AE-1 Program 35mm film camera and think that it will be a great idea to take some shots with it. I shortly there-after put it away and forget about it until another 6 months have passed. At this pace it can take a couple years to actually see the results. I recently took a roll of Fuji 200 in to get developed and it turned out that there were a bunch of photos from the NHL playoffs last fall.

These are completely un-edited and were taken using a Canon AE-1 Program and a 50mm 1.8 lens.

Sunday Snow Cycling Shinanigans

I should be changing the name of the blog to “… Weekend photos say more than words” Seems that is about all I can manage these days. Today involved going for a ride on the North Shore and of course I brought along my camera to take a few shots. These are on the trail Expresso which (if I am not mistaken) is between the 5th and 6th switchback up Mt. Fromme. despite a few inches of snow on the trail it was a lot of fun. Plus, it was cold enough that the snow was relatively dry.

Keeping busy in a (Vancouver) Winter Environment

Weather is subjective. A Vancouverite can only tolerate so much, while it is -40 in Alberta us west-coasters cringe at the dash rarely placed before a temperature. This weekend was one of those times where the mercury sunk below the zero mark and water became ice. Trying to venture outside the comfort zone of the average YVR local, Kelly and I went out for a couple hikes. One hike had tennis racket shoes (also known as snowshoes) while the other was slightly more traditional.

here are a few photos from the two different hikes. These shots come from Mt Seymour Provincial Park and Deer Lake Park in Burnaby BC.

Keeping a Close Eye

I went for a bike ride today and brought my camera along. The idea was to get a few shots and do an update to the blog about winter riding in Vancouver. That did not happen. It was pouring rain, snow was on the ground and everything was sopping wet. . . I took 3 photos or so which were all useless.

In the spirit of keeping the blog up to date though, I thought I would try something a little different. I have always like eye photography and with that spirit pushing me forward I tried taking some shots of my own right eye. This was totally worth it but I am still seeing spots from that damn flash. While this shot has been ‘shopped. the original photo had the following setup.

A Few Fogotten Photos From Frivolous Festivities

Going through my photos from the past while there were a few that I figured were worthy of a posting. These are pretty random in nature but I think they tell a little bit of a story around this past holiday season.

I am heading back to work tomorrow. As a result, the blog will not be neglected but it will less active than it has been for the last few weeks. I doubt anyone with complain though.

A Snowshoe Through the Clouds

I went snowshoeing up Mt Seymour yesterday. Climbing through the clouds the visibility was pretty poor but it did open up enough to snap a few photos along the way. I have now hiked this route twice but have yet to see the supposed view from the top. Another day! All the photos below were taken using a Canon 7D and a Canon 300mm f4l lens.

Freelensing??? Is that a thing?

Stumbling through the internet… it seems to be a rather large place lately I came across the concept of “freelensing”. It was interesting to read about and even more interesting to think that I had a similar idea some 18 months or so ago in my original photo-per-day blog. The idea is to make a tilt-shift effect through the twisting of a lens not attached to the body. While a fantastic photo is nearly impossible, in a low-dust situation it was a fun task that was both thought evocative and creativity inducing.
